4 Ways to Use Leftover Hot Foil

Don’t Let a Single Piece of Foil Go to Waste!

Have you ever finished a hot foiling project and wondered if you should throw away the leftover foil?

Don’t!

One of the best things about the new Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System is that you can often get multiple uses from the same piece of foil. With just a few simple adhesives, those leftover foil pieces can become beautiful accents on your handmade cards.

In today’s video, I’m sharing four easy ways to use leftover hot foil so you can stretch your supplies, save money, and create even more gorgeous projects.

1. Apply an Adhesive Sheet First

This is my favourite method because it creates a clean, even layer of adhesive across your entire design.

Simply apply an Adhesive Sheet to your cardstock before adding the leftover foil. Once you’ve removed the backing, place the foil (pretty side up) over the adhesive and burnish it with your fingers or a bone folder.

Why I love it:

  • Perfect for larger images
  • Smooth, professional-looking finish
  • No messy glue
  • Great for intricate designs

2. Use Tear & Tape or Scotch Tape

If you only want to foil a small section or create decorative borders, Tear & Tape Adhesive (or even clear Scotch tape) works surprisingly well.

Lay down strips of adhesive, place your leftover foil over top, then rub firmly before peeling away the foil carrier.

This technique is perfect for:

  • Borders
  • Stripes
  • Geometric backgrounds
  • Quick embellishments

It’s a simple way to add metallic shine without using another hot foil plate.

3. Add Liquid Glue

Liquid Glue gives you lots of flexibility because you can apply it exactly where you want the foil to stick.

Allow the glue to become slightly tacky before laying the foil over top. Burnish well, then carefully peel away the foil.

This method works especially well for:

  • Handwritten sentiments
  • Dots and splatters
  • Custom backgrounds
  • Small embellishments

A little glue goes a long way!

4. Try Glue Dots

Need a fast way to add tiny touches of foil?

Glue Dots are perfect!

Simply place Glue Dots wherever you’d like a metallic accent, press the leftover foil over top, burnish, and peel away.

You’ll create beautiful little foil accents that are perfect for:

  • Flower centres
  • Stars
  • Snowflakes
  • Confetti
  • Decorative dots

It’s one of the quickest ways to use every last bit of your foil.

Don’t Throw Those Scraps Away!

Before you toss your used foil, try one of these techniques. You’ll be amazed at how many extra projects you can create using materials that might otherwise end up in the recycling bin.

Sometimes the smallest leftovers create the biggest impact!
